[14-May-2006] Milada is -- without a doubt -- the worst landlord I've ever had. She owned a four unit building, which she got from her husband in a divorce settlement. There were two large units and two small units. My room-mate and I rented one of the large units from her for almost three years.

The worst thing about having her as a landlord was that she wasn't truthful. The best example of that was our utility bill. We had always had a large utility bill, but it was even larger at this new apartment. We tried all sorts of things to reduce our energy costs but nothing worked. Milada's boyfriend at the time, John Bottenberg, was an electrician. He assured us that everything was OK; that we were just using a lot of electricity. We finally had the PG&E utility company come out to check things. As it turned out, John had wired the major appliances in the small unit below us into our circuit breaker. As landlords, they tried to convince us that we were using all that power, and all the while they were flat-out lying to us.

Milada and John ended up moving into our apartment (evicting us in order to do so). Everyone who lived in the building when she moved in moved out very quickly. I believe she's sold three of the four units and now lives in the other.
