COMMENTS (1)
[24-Sep-2017] Rather than being like renting from a colleague, the landlord (the wife of a professor at CMC) from the beginning was surprisingly adversarial. She was very difficult to deal with, especially when preparing to move in, did not provide adequate information about the house, and came up with flimsy excuses to withhold some of the deposit after we moved out.
1. Before we moved in the landlord became so obsessed about the gas being turned off during the transition from her moving out and me moving in that she compelled me to call Southern California Gas 5 times from Norway to repeatedly confirm that they would not in fact turn off the gas and attached a shut off notice to the front door.
2. This house was advertised as having optional Satellite TV, but in fact after I signed the lease the landlord effectively coerced me to pay her to continue her Direct TV subscription, leaving me essentially no options or choices.
3. She advertised the house as furnished, but left me with a dining room table with no chairs. Then, a few days after we moved in her friend showed up and tried to sell us chairs.
4. The pool pump had repeated technical problems and in responding to this at one point she threatened to show up with an electrician, shut off the power to the entire house, and check every plug.
5. When I moved out she withheld money for repairing small nicks in the paint of a used Chinese cabinet, even though I had a move in picture demonstrating that those nicks predated my move in.
6. She withheld nearly $500 to have the stone counter top in the kitchen re polished, even though she could not document any noticeable scratches or other significant problems with the counter (beyond normal wear and tear that was covered through monthly rent). Moreover, she did not leave us with any instructions about how to care for the stone counter top, nor a manual about how to care for the house either.
7. If you have the misfortune of renting this house be sure to treat the kitchen counter top as a decoration that is not to be used, unless you want to be charged $500 later for re-polishing it (even then she might end up charging you anyway).
8. She leveled various other charges at us, including for water stains on an old table that predated our move in, and carpet damage from a water “leak” from the air conditioner, even though there was no carpet anywhere near the air conditioner, and no indication of a water leak. She also charged us with being responsible for a slow leak under the kitchen sink that discolored some wood behind the sink, even though it wasn’t our responsibility to root around checking for leaks or other problems in dark places, and even though she had told me how new the kitchen was and claimed that she had done a lot of preventative maintenance before we moved in.
