[19-Aug-2020] I intended to view an apartment owned by this man however I experienced discriminatory behavior instead. I have cats registered as ESA which I disclosed to the agent showing the property. He referred me to the landlord to discuss how I would not be paying the $50/mo pet rent for my ESA. Mark Nesser replied by saying, "I have never heard of that before. That means your pets can damage my apartment and I will have no recourse!" I assured him that my ESA is well trained and would cause no damage and besides ITS THE LAW to allow me with the ESA at no extra cost. I also mentioned that I had yet to view the apartment but was scheduled for that afternoon and he said, "well you still have to apply then" (not true I had to apply to get a viewing). Hours later I was in contact with the agent again whom I had a viewing scheduled with to confirm my appointment (per his request) he replied, "didnt you say you had cats? The landlord already told me he spoke to you about the cats". At this time I realized I was being discriminated against for having a support animal. I was denied the ability to even view the apartment because Mark Nesser was afraid he wouldn't make more money off my ESA. Or that somehow a domestic house cat would cause damage beyond the cost of a regular security deposit. Please note that it is ILLEGAL to deny someone housing if they have an ESA even if the property has a no pets policy - which Mark Nesser does not. I was informed first hand that pets were allowed-at a cost (also something anyone with an ESA does not need to adhere to). The previous tenant had a cat- there are pictures of cat toys and a litter box in the craigslist ad for the apartment. Do not give this man your money! |
