[11-Apr-2021] This is our experience with the landlord Andrew Clifton: we contacted him about a listing for one of the apartments he was renting for $2,300. Right when we were about to sign the lease, he informed us that the electric and gas bills had to be included and proceeded to add $75 to the rent amount. A month after we moved in he came to our house unannounced, full of anger that the gas bill was high, and told us to stop using the gas heater as much. We did not want him to come back again without giving us notice. Since there’s no way to immediately send him a written request because he won’t give you his cellphone number or his email address, my husband waited for him to calm down and called him the next day on the landline number he provided. He asked him to give us a call before coming to our house and explained why this is important to us. The reason why it’s important to us is because the front door of the unit is a glass sliding door which means that if you’re standing at the front door it’s basically like you’re inside the apartment. You can clearly see through the glass into the room, so for the landlord to show up unannounced is very invasive.
A few weeks later, Mr Clifton comes over and says he needs to cut the electricity of the whole building for a while from the panel inside our unit. He did not call beforehand to tell us he was coming nor did he give notice that he needed to come in to cut the electricity. I was home alone in my pajamas and it made me very uncomfortable to let him in. To make matters worst, I got in trouble at work because I didn’t get a chance to tell anyone that I was going to be offline due to the electricity being cut. When my husband came home I told him what happened and he immediately called Mr Clifton and once again asked him to please call (he said please so many times) before coming to our house. This has made no difference whatsoever on Andrew Clifton’s behavior. For the entire year that we lived in that unit, he kept showing up unannounced, whether for putting a mat in front of the sliding glass door or for other different reasons. We’ve never felt at home and could never relax living there. |
