[19-Apr-2021] My very first solo apartment as a young woman trying to be independent in the city I picked this rental very quickly without looking elsewhere because I was in a time crunch and I fell in love with the Victorian vintage look inside and out, and it was affordable for me at the time. I did a walk through with the landlord and imagined my cozy little space that I could have a simple foundation to start building myself..by the end of the tour I signed a year lease. Sure, the landlord seemed a little awkward at times or kinda seemed like a stickler whatever not an icebreaker. I am half way through said lease and I will say when the time comes I will be looking elsewhere to move next.
I am actually a very patient, meek, humble and super petite little lady! I know what your thinking why is she talking about her build? Well, the first day I got my keys from my landlord he went out of town for a full month. I guess he has specific trips he repeats every year and they are always longer than two weeks. I am new at the living on your own thing especially under a landlord not just an apartment with professional management.
Also, I would hope that when you sign your lease you don’t read it everyday or hang it in a picture frame. That doesn’t seem normal maybe I’m the weird one because I filed it away in a cabinet. Anyways, he left out of town and I went to go turn the shower on. Me being the short elf I am went to angle the shower head away so the stream would hit elsewhere (by the way the shower is tiny) but when that happened boom the piping straight up broke clean through the wall and water was spouting everywhere. Ah! Panic mode. Well my landlord is out of town with no cell service now what? I needed this fixed really bad because I had company coming to town in two days let alone I need to shower. So, I called a plumber and ended up paying $200 for a fix. During this time when all this is going on it was winter,
HERE IS the main complaint I have about this place is the HEATING CONTROLS.. yes it is a old house I understand that’s not how things were wired back then. Especially if your turning a house to an apartment complex. But long story short you have no control over the temperature of the building.. he does. Oh yeah let me mention the landlord lives above you and then someone else rents on top floor so he is right in the middle. Heat rises and basements are always cold 🥶 well I found myself freezing so I got a space heater just a normal little guy you buy at Walmart. Well, it was nice for a second or two until that thing takes up all the power and flips the breaker so not only does it shut off my power but his... Mr landlord gets back from the vacation which was weird because I started realizing how paper thin the floor and ceiling ratio is and the vents were mostly mumble but there were times I would be lying on my couch and could kinda make out what people were saying. Not on purpose I just caught him talking straight up smack about me to his girlfriend about me “god she hired a plumber to come fix it instead of looking at the emergency numbers I left her on her lease.” (The emergency number is his mother who he inherited the property from) I’m sure that I’m going to call an old lady to come fix my plumbing right that moment.. it wasn’t an easy fix..And goes on talking about how I’m tired of her flipping the breaker.
One thing after another would happen whether it was a property issue or a simple question I had about recycling. All the walls are made of brick so don’t plan on hanging any thing.. unless you are okay with using command strips that either fall off or have the strength to pull the paint off. When I would ask questions or let him know of an issue he would make me feel dumb and I just kept thinking man I’m paying my rent on time a week early in advance. I am never loud. I did start working a graveyard shift where I would come home for breaks and watch a little tv but I would get texts saying you did this wrong and why didn’t you do it that way? One day I even got a knock on the door with him asking why my ceiling fan was on if I complain so much about it being so cold. I wanted some airflow in the house for basement smell especially with my candles on so what. It was really weird because I asked what the issue was and he goes well I can hear it from upstairs..when I countlessly made sure that my tv was never too loud and he replied with I’m deaf in one ear so it’d all good just to get a knock on my door complaining about how he can hear the ceiling fan. So now I’m afraid to even ask anything so I can avoid getting negative feedback and I’ll just walk around my house freezing and paying for repairs for the next few months while he lives nice and cozy upstairs taking all the tenants money and oh fails to mention that legally he has to reimburse what I’m paying to fix. I’ve heard it from everyone that’s not right especially the heat thing...
After all that I feel like he started being really snoopy with how many packages I would get from amazon prime a day but I was literally starting from square one with nothing to my name and when I worked my ass off you bet I deserve to order whatever I want. I am sure there are a few other things I could list as cons or take more time out of my day to type this message. I just think there’s a lot of landlords that need to treat their tenants a little better so that a review like this doesn’t have to come up and they can have good tenants coming to reapply in the future. Signing off and hope it helped a little. |
