[02-Sep-2021] I lived with Valerie for one month and started couch surfing before the month was over. She would call and text complaints throughout the day, write notes and leave them all over, and generally give me the feeling that she was following me with a grimace as I tried to move in while working. She made it clear after I moved in that she considered the house to be hers and me to be someone she was granting the privilege of living there, though I was paying 1200/mo. She was subletting the basement to me and so I used a utility sink and an aged and stained toilet. This was fine for me. But I still needed to share a shower and a kitchen with her. This became increasingly stressful. She made me bring up a bath mat and towel for every shower, as I wasn’t allowed to keep them in “her” bathroom. She had a strict routine for showering that I won’t get into but I complied with. Needless to say, I did not want to use the kitchen as I knew a slew of complaints and demands would follow. Keep in mind that all of this was one way. She would leave things plugged in and dishes in the sink herself. But god forbid I do so! She didn’t tell me til after I moved in that no space in the 2+ car garage and 2 car driveway could be used by me, despite having seen me park there on the multiple occasions before my move and having said nothing. Living on the south end and being victimized by repeated car theft and damage, I was not ok with this belated demand.
Her wifi was $100/mo and did not work downstairs at all. When I brought it up she responded by saying that it worked for people before. Keep in mind that I had two different work laptops, my personal laptop, a work phone, and my personal phone. None of these got wifi that was worth even $10/mo much less $50. I suspect I was unwittingly paying for her cable in that portion of the bill as well. I’ve had $20 wifi that worked splendidly. $100? Nope. Anyway, we bickered and I tried to stand up for myself, which was clearly not what she expected. I moved out and she said she wouldn’t return my deposit despite having given me neither a lease nor a move-in checklist. So, legally she had no right to keep it. I have since sent her a letter with the relevant code, requesting that she refund my $500 deposit.
Just wish I had known these things sooner. So, I’m passing this info along. ✌️
