[21-Oct-2021] We felt cheated out of security deposit. He kept the whole thing. It probably didn’t help that he was telling us he just had to return it to the condition it was in before while simultaneously doing a full interior remodel and getting ready to sell the house. He didn’t paint it before I moved in and yet he charged us almost a thousand dollars to paint it before he coincidentally went and sold the place. That’s some sketchy stuff. In all my years I don’t think I can remember a single landlord that’s tried to keep even part of my security deposit, let alone the whole thing. I just clean the place up like a reasonable person and patch up my holes in the wall and my landlords have been happy. That’s exactly what I did here too but instead he came back saying it probably would have been better if I hadn’t patched my holes cuz now he has to paint the place… for ~$1,000… because I patched my holes… even though he was, in my opinion, probably going to do that anyway if for no other reason than to sell the place (honestly what kind of landlord doesn’t paint between tenants?). At any rate, I’d be very careful giving this guy your security deposit, I can tell you first hand you might not ever get it back. The way he did it was really sketchy too, we were totally blindsided we thought the inspection went well and he was happy and then nearly a month later when we asked for the deposit he sends us the paperwork saying he decided we weren’t gonna get any money back at all.
