[17-Dec-2010] Please do not rent from Colleen or Jim Sleeper. We moved into one of their many rental properties in spring 2010 and were told that the apartment would be very warm in the winter. Despite not having a thermostat in the apartment or a radiator in the bathroom, we trusted them. On the day we were to move in, there was junk everywhere in the apartment, and I do mean actual junk. There were paint cans everywhere, the place was filthy, there were tools still laying about as if the landlord was still working in the apartment. The ceiling tiles and ceiling in two rooms that were water damaged still had not been fixed. The place was a mess but they already had out money. Still, benefit of the doubt.
Then September 15 came. No heat. Then October came. No heat. Then October 20 came and we called the housing inspector. In Massachusetts, landlords are required to provide heat from September 15 until sometime in May. When the inspector came, the landlord told him- as he had told me for a month- that "the plumber and gas guy were on their way". No plumber or gas guy ever came. It was Jim Sleeper's way of keeping our rent in his pocket.
Then December came and the heat went off completely. We called back the inspector twice because calling the landlord got us nowhere. In fact, when I called Jim Sleeper the last time, he hung up on me after telling me to "go call Charlie [the inspector]. When the inspector came the first time, Jim Sleeper yelled at him to "go ahead and cite him, he didn't care". We think Jim knew someone downtown.
I should have listened to the person living next door when he told me that Colleen and Jim Sleeper use their rental properties as ATM machines. You will freeze in your apartment that you rent from them. Nothing will get fixed. You will pay your $1200 a month and no repairs will ever be made. They are Cambridge, Massachusetts slumlords, which I thought was an oxymoron until I met them. |
