[10-May-2011] This landlord provides substandard accomodations which have been superficially touched up to look reasonably appealing. Although the neighborhood is rapidly become gentrified, behind the veneer the building is old and in poor repair, although the original Craiglslist posting boasted "completely remodeled". I encountered multiple issues (backed up sewer filling up shower and kitchen sink with crud only one week after move-in, leaking roof that poured through lighting fixtures and caused electrical problems that were never resolved) within the first couple of months and she grudgingly made a few bandaid repairs (patched tar paper roof) but left dangerous code violations unresolved (circuit breaker pops whenever bathroom light switch is turned on and breaker is inaccessible as it is locked in her garage). Some kind of stains on walls and mold in shower seeped through superficial patching shortly after I moved in. Units are behind her house down a narrow driveway which was completely free of vehicles when she showed the apartment. After I moved in she consistently blocked ingress and egress with her car to the point at which residents are forced to lift packages over their heads and inch sideways between her car and neighbors cars in order to reach their own apartments. She blames the neighbors for parking too many vehicles in their own adjacent driveway and accepts no responsibility for providing access to her own residents. There is some kind of ancient gas heating device inset into the fireplace which must be lit with a match after one crawls on the floor to find the jet. The unit must be at least 60 years old and has two options - excessive overheating (approx. 90 degrees within minutes) or off. On warmer days a window unit air conditioner is out of the question as it will blow one or both of the 2 circuit breakers. For this she charges over $1000/month for only a relatively small studio unit. I was finally forced to file complaints with the city. She then responded with an illegal retaliatory eviction notice and refused to return the security deposit when I moved out.
I would not recommend this landlord whatsoever. She lacks integrity and only wants money. Run! Not worth the headache and aggrievation! |
