[04-Oct-2011] This landlord wrongfully witheld our deposit upon move-out. We completed a thorough cleaning of the home including yard work. We made improvements to the property (all walls freshly painted in a professional manner). We did not damage the home except for a few instances of wear and tear (a piece of vinyl flooring was torn, for example). I expected to receive about 90-95% of our deposit back, allowing the other 5-10% for the tear in the floor. The landlord not only did not refund any of the deposit, she actually billed us over $300 extra for things that we did not do. for example, on the day of move-out we deep-cleaned the entire home (cleaned floors, carpets, all surfaces, disinfected kitchen... I could go on). She claimed that we left rotten food on the floor and didn't clean anything. It's an unfortunate case of my word against hers, and while I am not giving her an extra cent of my money, I doubt she would ever refund the money that I deserve. I strongly warn everyone against renting from her. If you are currently renting from her, make sure that upon move-out you document your cleaning and maintenance of the home and ask her to do a walk-through with you to see if there is anything else she wants you to do in order to get your deposit back. I wish I had done this, because in not doing so she was able to fabricate information about my tenancy. |
