[17-Oct-2012] I rented an apartment that was very cute but entirely illegal and prone to major problems from KNG - a duplex on the ground floor and basement of a large building. Here are just a few complaints:
- The basement flooded on a regular basis and the landlord really could've cared less. It wasn't until my *boyfriend* figured out the problem that was causing the flooding that we finally got some relief - but even then, it was entirely our responsibility to make sure that the drainage pipe in question didn't get clogged. The landlord had zero interest in fixing it. Until *we* identified the problem with *his* building, he would just apologize and ask what I wanted to do about it.
- Our neighbors had a toilet explode, spewing sewage all over the downstairs portion of their apartment. The landlord did NOTHING and they had to call Health Dept inspectors in to get the mgmt company to clean it up.
- The landlord has a history of illegally destabilizing apartments. An upstairs neighbor stopped paying rent when he found out that his place should've been stabilized; eventually he settled out of court with the LL. My apartment was also illegally destabilized, but it happened too many years ago for me to do anything about it in court.
- The entire company is run by Hasidic Jews. I don't care what religion you practice, but good luck getting help if you have an urgent problem in your building from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. No one will answer their phones and the super won't do a thing without instruction from the LL.
- The building was simply falling apart. Frequent hot water problems when we first moved in, electricity issues, and there's been constant water damage in the basement (when it flooded it would eventually just seep right back out again).
- The company is also unbelievably greedy - for my illegal piece of shit apartment, they were demanding an absolutely exorbitant amount of rent when my housemates wanted to renew the lease (I got the hell out of there). If you find a cheap place from this company, just know that they will jack up your rent so fast it will make your head spin.
In sum: very shady, irresponsible, greedy company. Stay away! |
