COMMENTS (1)
[17-Jun-2013] My husband and I lived in Matt DePree's 6 unit building on Greenview for 2 years without any problems - other than his continuous lie about completing the backyard. Unfortunately, we chose his apartment for our baby boy over another because we were told the backyard would have grass put in, instead of construction ruble.

Upon move out day - EVERYTHING changed. Our first warning was from another tenant upstairs. She said things got so bad with Matt and his parents bullying her for normal wear and tear, that she hired a lawyer. My husband and I spent 8 hours the night before we moved out cleaning the whole place with baking soda and vinegar (I'm pregnant and refuse to use toxic chemicals). We had to clean just as much upon our original move in date, as Matt told us he'd have a cleaning person wipe out the remodeling soot, but never delivered on this promise. After the movers packed up all our boxes, my husband even went back through the apartment and wiped everything down again.

My husband stayed behind for the move out inspection while I brought our son to our new home. Matt and his parents showed up trying to assert their power in numbers and literally inspected everything with a fine tooth comb. They tried to say we didn't clean (I have photos proving we did) and tried to say the NORMAL wear and tear on the hardwood floors warranted replaced boards. We're talking NORMAL wear and tear. My husband was tired after moving all day and succumbed to their petty little game of greed - and agreed to pay $125 for cleaning/floors.

Low and behold, when Matt FINALLY sent our security deposit back (the full 30 allotted days later) - he deducted another $175 for a floor buff. This was not what we agreed to. When we called to discuss this change of events, he became irate and told us to sue him. Unfortunately we don't have the time it'd cost to take this low life to court.

Matt DePree, his mom Lily and his father own several other apartment units in Chicago. If you don't want to pay another $200-$500 upon move out for problems that don't exist, avoid this family at all costs.
