[09-Mar-2014] The apt. I rented from was in a house I later found out was widely considered to be the most problematic "blighted" place in the neighborhood because the other tenants she chose to rent to were all (literally, all) obvious violent, illegal drug dealers. I learned that before I moved in, a stabbing had occurred outside of my door, and when I asked that she improve my locks so that they worked properly, she didn't. After months, I had to involve the city, as she had to be legally mandated to improve the slum conditions she was charging people to live in. However, throughout my time there, there were constant knocks at my door at all hours by men looking to buy drugs. It was not a safe environment.
She rarely returned phone calls asking for reasonable repairs, and often conducted business through her maintenance man, a tall, big boned intimidating person that seemed more interested in staying on "the clock" and trying to flirt with me than fixing things. He spent hours upon hours in my apt. On the day the water was shut off because she'd "forgotten" to pay the bill, those hours were extremely uncomfortable, as my toilet was not flushing. She tasked him with collecting rent and other things, and I honestly think it's because she was afraid of her tenants. I was, too! However, I am the one who had to live there.
There was a very serious mouse infestation. One morning, a live one crawled out of my bed shortly after I did. She would only "invest" money in traps that clearly didn't work (the ones I personally was forced to buy did, and I placed them right next to the ones she had to photograph their inefficacy).
While I was certainly screened before I moved there, I wish there was a way that tenants could do the same for free. She contributed very much to downtown Kalamazoo's problem of having "blighted" areas, and many would probably call her a slumlord. Beware. |
