[10-Jun-2014] The landlady is a well-mannered and polite elderly woman. Her house is nice and well kept. The bedroom is furnished! However, tenants should be aware that this landlady has a peculiar personality that makes living with her feel a bit uncomfortable. She is especially, in my opinion, passive aggressive and judgmental. The general atmosphere makes you feel like an intruder rather than a housemate.
If you are a neat freak to the extreme, enjoy having your personal space violated, or are a WASP with little to no interactions with other cultures then I would recommend renting at this place.
Here are a few "rules" that she will impose on you:
1. At least be home before midnight (even though you're obviously an adult not living with your parents). If you go pass midnight you need to sleep somewhere else.
2. Do not flush the toilet after she has gone to bed because it wakes her up.
3. If you're new in town and have made a new friend they are not invited over unless you have known them for more than several months. Landlady must meet and observe these friends before giving her approval to let you invite them to the house.
Obviously significant others are not allowed in your bed overnight.
4. Do not sit or place anything on her precious (terribly ugly) rug that is in the rented bedroom.
5. Keep your belongings in your room and nowhere else in the house. Although she did not say it and it's not in the contract, her passive aggressive actions will definitely tell you to keep your items in your room.
6. Make your bed.
7. Don't expect to get your security deposit back.
This landlady had made such ridiculous claims. During the winter she had let me used her down quilt and pillows. After our contract was over she said that the pillows and quilt cannot be reused because my personal odor had "ruined" them. She claimed that she cannot even give them away as a donation because the smell is not acceptable. I don't believe her at all.
She took $250 from my $775 deposit to replace the quilt and pillows. And then she took another $125 to fix the drain in the tub, which had no draining issues before I left.
I need to warn you that she will make claims just so she can take more of your money. I absolutely don't believe that she was unable to donate the down quilt because of my personal odor.
Obviously her clever plan was to take as much as she can from my deposit and reuse the items she claims that can't be reused for the new tenants. |
