[17-Aug-2014] These were terrible landlords. Let's start with the move-in: The apartment was dirty and dusty. There were spiders and other bugs everywhere. The previous tenant had left behind a lot of things in the closet that they didn't bother to clean out.
After moving in: They don't make appointments for their maintenance staff to enter your apartment, so they just come in whenever they please. One time, a maintenance man walked into my apartment while I was half naked (I'm a woman). I attempted to contact the landlords about this via e-mail, stating I'd like at least half an hour advanced notice, but preferably 24-hours. They refused to comply until I told them that the maintenance guy had walked into my apartment while I was undressed. Even then, it didn't stick. Another time, the maintenance staff came over for an inspection of sorts, and I had to leave before they were finished. When I came back SEVEN HOURS LATER from a day full of classes, I was mortified to find that the maintenance staff had left the door WIDE OPEN. Note, the door led outside, not to the rest of the apartment complex. When I called them to complain, it took them almost half an hour to even admit that something was wrong. Instead, they claimed that my rent was already lower than a typical apartment's because maintenance was often required of the boiler. They ended up knocking $100 off that month's rent, but again, it took half an hour on the phone with them for them to admit any wrongdoing. After this, they said that they'd require the maintenance team to call or text me in advance to coming in. However, just this week, maintenance has come over THREE TIMES --twice unannounced. Once, I was taking a nap and took about a minute to get to the door. When I opened the door, the maintenance guy already had his key in the door. The next visit was announced. For the most recent visit, I was out. They maintenance person/people came into my apartment without calling me or texting me, moved some of my stuff around without replacing it, and tracked mud on my carpet and into my bathtub. If you value your privacy, STAY AWAY from these people. They don't check their e-mail every day, and pick and choose what issues they pay attention to. This past month, somebody stole one of my mail packages, and I contacted the landlords about it. It's been about three weeks, and I had no response from them at all. Last week, I told them about a broken towel rack and they got back to me the next day saying that it would be fixed. Nobody has fixed it.
I will be moving out next week, and will update with how that process goes.
**UPDATE** I have fully moved out. My lease is set to end tomorrow. I left my apartment in the wee hours of the morning yesterday (or very late the night before, depending on your perspective) to unpack at my new place. I still had some stuff at my old apartment, and it was obvious I hadn't completely left the apartment yet. I came back today to take care of some last minute business to find that the entire place is flooded with the smell of paint fumes (seriously nauseating in it's concentration given the fact I live in a basement with windows that barely open). They moved my furniture away from the walls, making it a pain to get through the rooms. What things I had left here, they threw in the doorway with no concern as to whether or not they would be clean or unbroken by an opening door. No call, no text, no email telling me that my apartment would be painted while my lease is still active. I don't think I could dream of a more inconsiderate landlord and maintenance staff. |
