[06-Aug-2017] The location is great, the house is in an area with a lot of stores, and the neighbors are pretty friendly. The condition of the place when we moved in was dirty; we had to hire someone to come in and clean everything. The stove and dishwasher are pretty old, the cabinets painted over, and they didn't even bother taking things apart and painting it correctly, so you have to buy things to cover up the rust, and the horrible paint job inside. And from time to time while the dishwasher is running, you can even smell the detergent, and it is noisy. Oh, that brings up the washer, when that thing is in spin mode, it is noisy, and it shakes the house to the point dishes shake in the kitchen.
Our lease had some unusual things in it. For example, if the landlord smells dog/cat feces or urine, your security deposit becomes theirs. However, this was appended to the lease the second year I was there. This ended up being an issue after I returned the keys when we moved out. I got a text message from the landlord saying they went through the house with a blue light and found evidence of dog urine, and that our neighbors confirmed that we had a dog. Needless to say, we never had any pets while we lived there. The landlord wanted to know how I was going to handle the repair costs etc, since my security deposit can no longer be used to cover the charges. This whole situation was very disappointing since we hired carpet cleaners, hired yard service, to cut trees, remove trees, add mulch in flowerbeds, someone to pressure wash the house, all this to give the place back to the landlord in a state better than when they gave it to us.
A bright side, since the landlord didn't want to maintain the property, at least you get the opportunity to know how much work it is, and how much it cost for repairs, etc. This is my second time renting a house, so I know this isn't normal.
The last thing that was annoying, the landlord wanted to show people the place before we moved out. And initially, he would call that same day wanting to show the place, initially I was cool with that, however, most of the time he wanted to come around dinner time, or family movie night. So I asked him if we could please get 24 hours notice, and perhaps set up available times. The landlord said, the 24-hour notice is only for agents, and not for him since he is the owner, and that he was just being courteous even to ask because he didn't have to.
Almost forgot, the landlord pushes the fourth room upstairs as a bedroom, but you can't live up there during the summer, or during the winter. The portable A/C unit can't maintain a livable temperature during the summer, or the winter. So during this time the room wasn't usable for us. So you really only have 3 bedrooms. I tried using the upstairs as my office, but found myself downstairs more than I was upstairs. Also, at the time I was there, the unit didn't have a hose to route condensation outside, so I had to manually drain it when it filled up.
If you are looking for a place, keep looking, because I am sure there are better places out there. This was definitely not worth it.
P.S. - Fireplace doesn't work, and the mount over the fireplace is only for show that doesn't work either. A lot of these things that do not work, the landlord blames on the previous owner, or the company he hired that inspected the place before he bought it. But at the end of the day, he hasn't done anything to fix them, so basically the only one to blame is the landlord.
