[25-Nov-2020] Where do I begin? I’ll start off by saying I was a tenant, along with my two roommates, for two years beginning in April 2018. I lived on Baltic Road. The house was big and just what we wanted. We had bedbugs and they gave us a deal on heat treatment.
Everything was great for about a month until something uncomfortable happened. The landlord, Chris, is a creep. He came over to deliver a letter and I was there. We were having a conversation and I started getting upset about something personal we were talking about. He came over to me and started rubbing my back under my shirt. I was stunned. I told my roommates and they called the office and notified them. No apology and Chris never owned up to what he did that was beyond unprofessional. That’s when the formerly amicable tenant/landlord relationship ended. We only started keeping in contact with Vicky instead of Chris after that. No more visits from Chris to the property and the male roommate took rent to the office.
The plumbing upstairs was a constant problem and it took weeks for someone to show up and fix it. Once it was fixed it would be good for a week and then back to being broke.
Little things would break too. A metal bar for the towel holder in the downstairs. The ever-leaky refrigerator.
When March 2020 rolled around we were ready to leave. They asked us if we were leaving early and I said yes, since COVID-19 could possibly halter moving. Mid March we had moved most of our belongings out. All we had to do was clean. My two roommates drove from Columbus back to Cleveland to help me clean. We cleaned the whole house for several hours. The fridge, the windowsills, vacuuming and mopping the floors, we hit everything. Bathrooms, living room, EVERYWHERE. We left a few pieces of furniture behind on the premises because there was no bulk garbage pick up due to COVID-19.
Early April I get a text from Vicky asking whether I cleaned out the fridge. I said I cleaned it myself, washed the refrigerator drawers and all. Late April comes and we are all moved. We get a letter stating what has been taken out of our deposit.
They took money out of our deposit for 16 hours of cleaning which amounted to $400. We cleaned before we left. There is no way they had to do any cleaning, let alone 16 HOURS OF CLEANING. They charged us for the first and second of April even though we were out by April 1st (we got our money back after complaining that it was inconsistent). V & C were SO COURTEOUS as to not charge us $250 (only charged $100) for early gas shut off. WE LEFT EARLY BC OF COVID-19. I understand the $150 furniture removal charge kind of even though we had no way of getting rid of it due to no bulk pick up being provided because of lockdown. I should have taken pictures of everything we cleaned.
All in all, they will try to get you for every last buck. They take forever with maintenance and are rude. I got creeped on in the very home I was renting after only being there for a week. It was a two year lease and we had no choice but to stay. This is me doing my job as a woman to warn other women to watch out for this behavior. Men have no right to touch you in anyway, especially when they are in a position of power. Just because you are a woman doesn’t make you their petting zoo.
