[02-May-2022] The Benefits of living at 306 stephen street are that it is a beautiful home, built in the late 1890's. The bones of the house are still fabulous and it is a wonderful home itself. Parts are dated - but nothing that isn't insurmountable. Hardwood floors on first level are fine in living room, but are separating in kitchen area. Downstairs bathroom is tight but workable for 1 person. Cabinets have issues staying closed. The Downtown Lemont area itself is very nice, with quick access to restaurants, trails, entertainment, everything. It is a wonderful neighborhood to live in for the most part.
As for the negatives - it is on a VERY busy street. Our cars have been hit 6 times in 3 years, each a hit-and-run. The neighbors are not "neighborly" and we are glad to be moving to a different area where we may feel a bit more welcome.
Most importantly to note, the landlord will NOT respect your privacy. At all. Be prepared for her to come over, and inside the property, with no warning at all. She will send workmen over and not tell you - we caught one peeping in our windows. She has owned the property outright since the 1970's so anything you pay to her doesn't go to a mortgage - it goes directly into her pocket which makes you wonder why the property needs so many repairs.
I have rented from a number of landlords in 20 years, and i do have to say she may have been the worst. Please utilize caution when renting from her. You are transactional to her - she doesn't care about your situation. Remember that.
*UPDATE*
Landlord has refused to return approximately half of our security deposit upon move-out, taking over a month to do so. Her reasoning is that there are minor holes in the walls and scratches on the floor - normal wear and tear on a property. I advise anyone looking to rent this property to be wary of Virginia Swanson. She is a horrible landlord, and frankly a horrible person. I wish her nothing but the worst with the property.
