[06-Sep-2022] True definition of a slum Lord.

The apartment was disgusting upon move in day. No inspection was done to make sure it was in habitable conditions as the unit was flooded and several areas were covered in mold. Even drug paraphernalia was found just sitting in a cabinet. Unfortunately I had already signed the lease so I was stuck with the conditions and having to let Steven fix it all. Many issues arose while I stayed there, including leaking pipes and cockroaches. The landlord made many promises of professional cleaners, exterminators and landscapers prior to me signing, but after I signed none of those promises were fulfilled. He left garbage on the side rotting in the weather to the point where picking up the plastic containers they would break away into pieces. The photos he used to advertise were very old and inaccurate. I felt like I got baited into checking a much worse property, but he instantly offered money off and no utilities and the promise of cleaning up the yard and deep cleaning the inside. Finding an apartment is difficult right now and figured if it was really going to be professionally cleaned and look like the photos provided that it would be worth it. It was the worth decision of my life. I found a dead pregnant cockroach the second day I was there. I later found the door lock didn't work and the front portion of the door was broken. The weather guard was broken letting bugs walk right in. He advertised a washer and dryer in unit but then later told me that it's not part of the lease agreement and he's not responsible for them. That's because they don't work. The washing machine left brown spots on my clothes, even after I deep cleaned it. The wall on the other side of the shower is literally rotting and falling apart. When I checked the closet you could see water running down the wall. He stated it's condensation and normal for an old house. It's not. It's in severe disrepair and can harm someone. The flooding was caused by a broken sprinkler pipe. His solution? To turn off the sprinklers. So the lawn completely died. Perhaps that's his way of doing the lawn care he promised too. He insists on doing repairs himself but he's the furthest thing from a handyman. His solution to a broken window? Tape! He left all the broken glass for me when I moved in, but assured me it was only broken on the outside so it was fine. If you're also wondering why it doesn't come with a parking spot, but has a garage and covered parking that's because he rents it out as a bike shop and stores his bike in there too. So be ready to hear him come in on his bike when he feels like it. If you're interested in his Salt Bike City tours, I believe he stores his equipment and grill in there too next to where I found some dead cockroaches on the outside of the garage.

Overall I would not rent or do business with this man whatsoever. His response to my concerns about cockroaches? That bugs are a part of life and to be expected in a basement. I lived in basements before and trust me I've never had cockroaches. I'm a very clean person. When I said I wanted to break my lease early over living conditions he demanded 3 months rent and made no moves to fix any of the issues for the last month I was there because I was moving out. He had the nerve to ask "why should I when you're leaving?" He doesn't care about the living conditions for his renters and wants to take advantage of people who can't afford something more expensive.

PS he likes to bring up that he was on Judge Judy because a former tenant trashed his place. I looked into it and he illegally kicked out the tenant during the eviction freeze during early COVID. She had lost her job and had a 4 year old child. He changed the locks before she could completely move out. She left some things and accidentally damaged a wall. Just some extra context to show you the kind of landlord this is.
