[20-Jul-2010] The properties she owns are beautiful; that's why i'm sad to say that this has been one of the worst rental experiences I have ever had in my life. Its quite personal.
This is a person who is incapable of distinguishing between personal and professional boundaries, relationships, expectations. I should have known something was amok the first time I met her in person, and she told me that I needed to make sure I made my bed and put my shoes back in the closet before leaving for school. I rent a room in a house and in addition to using the common areas I have a lock on the door to my room which I never use. When she was visiting Pittsburgh for a week, I would come home with my hands full of books and try to open the door to my room and it would be locked...I didn't lock it....who did? She also did funny things like throw away my liquid hand soap, then when I replaced it with a bar of soap, a soap dish mysteriously appeared beneath it. But overall the invasion of privacy was very, very not funny.
She owns two properties in Pittsburgh with her husband on a "verbal lease" (that is actually written and emailed) in which she "reserves the right to both enter and inspect the property at any time".
She also states that "Should the landlord decides that the agreement is not working out, the landlord will give a 30 day notice and refund the security less any damages if any to the room or property."
When I first met spoke to her by phone, she seemed like a very warm, likable person, someone who obviously cares very much for her properties. I read these two statements and thought that they would be applied with some degree of reason.
Mr. and Mrs. Pomarico were at the property last month for a week, and they entered and exited and interrupted us in our underwear at dinner to talk about whatever they needed to tell us like we were at their absolute disposal.
Mr. Pomarico did, anyway, because I unwittingly made an enemy out of Mrs. Pomarico in the first 30 seconds of meeting her. She had promised to rent me a room thru the month of August, but later found a tenant that wanted the room for August 1st, so she was trying to find any reason that "things were not working out" (your bed wasn't made this morning; you can't leave a fan plugged in when you're not at home).
Rent from this woman at your own risk. Some people enjoy being mothered and she will treat you like her own children. I do not like being treated like a child. When she emailed me on the 5th and then the 15th to remind me that if she did not have a check in her hands by the 1st I would be charged $50, I paid her the summer rent in full hoping that she would leave me alone knowing that she has all her money up front.
Any normal landlord would love to have me. I get along great with the other tenants, clean up after myself, even watch the TV with headphones. But there is no reasonable action that will win over a woman like this. I can't stress to you enough, rent from this woman at your own risk.
