(Just to be sure that your looking at the right landlords:) Terry Calbow is about 5'11 and laid off (from more than one job, which he might tell you) man in his late 50's-early 60's. He has short and curly white hair and freaquently does a grunt to clear his throat. His wife Melinda is handicapped and a bit younger, and Terry rarely took care of her needs. They have a dog named Joey.
The room I stayed in was un-curtained and had no privacy, he was not ok with me adding in curtains. However, the other room DID have curtains. Prior to moving in he promised to have the room cleaned up and his stuff moved out. He did neither. My sibling and I had to do it for him.
The first thing you should know is that Terry and his co-landlord Melinda fight daily... more than loud enough for you to hear with your door closed (and headphones in.) If you choose to live here, you'll have to put up with hearing it everyday, which is them failing to provide you with a decent and peaceful atmosphere.
Second- Terry has 3 sons, one of which hangs around the house (homeless.) He has some mental issues and sleeps around the house, oftenly in the garage or on the stairs. Anyone I told about that was shocked and found it to be absurd for rentees to have to deal with this unpleasant situation.
Third- If Terry has an issue with you he tends to be uncivilized towards you (sometimes he'd be nice.) Example: The last night I stayed there he pounded on my door as hard as he could and started a fight with me rather than addressing the issue in a calm manner (he claimed I was slamming doors and even if I was he had no right to pound on the door.) I was threatening to phone the police to get him to back off and go back upstairs (he started cussing me out when I told him he should not be renting rooms out to people.) That was my second fight with him. The first fight he also intitiated.
Fourth- He rents out two rooms. My roomate, (that I had never met prior and rarely associated with while I was there) like myself, got away from Terry long before the rent expired because the living conditions he provided were unreasonable. They claim they never had problems with rentee's like this, but when BOTH of their rentees are "coincidentally" getting away from him way prior to the expiration of the rent, any reasonable person would find that very difficult to believe.
Fifth: He oftenly kept me up at night with the TV on loud enough for me to hear when I was trying to get some sleep since I had to be up early in the morning for classes. He initially respected my need for sleep when I called and asked him to turn it down, but it didn't take long for him to ignore me, claim he needed to hear it and couldn't if he turned it down any further, and started to tell me to "do your best."
Additional: He does invite you to come upstairs and use the kitchen if you please and he provides a parking spot for you as well as the occasional invite to eat with them, which I kindly refused due to the unappealing figthing I heard with them prior. The two roomates I had this experience with (like me) stayed in our rooms when we were there most of the time because we weren't comfortable with Terry. Melinda was much nicer (and actually civilized) but she still fought with Terry, which was the only issue I had with her.
I did not get any of my deposit back. He pinned "damage" on me that I was not responsible for and was there prior to myself moving in.
Conclusion: For $800 a month and a $300 deposit, you would be getting ripped off because you will definitely have to put up with their excessive fighting. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this guy, he has no moral right to be renting out rooms to unsuspecting victims.
