ADDITIONAL COMMENTS (1)
[05-Jan-2012] WORST landlord ever! I wouldn't rent from him if it was the last home on earth. When we moved in he told us he would finish things around the house that he hadn't had time to finish yet. Such as, fixing a ceiling fan that had exposed wires, painting/staining the front door, getting a register cover for the master bedroom, fixing of the fenced in backyard, and many other minor things that added up to be a lot. When moving in, we literally had to clean out the cupboards, and wash down all the walls because he had done some work in the kitchen and hadn't even cleaned it before we moved in. There was trash and broken glass in the cupboards and we also had to get the carpets professionally cleaned because two rooms upstairs smelled of cat/dog urine. Then when we moved out they claimed there was a "HUGE" stain on the living room floor and were mad that we didn't get the carepts cleaned.
Privacy is NOT GOOD. He not only entered our house without us knowing but the elderly neighbors next door told us several stories about how old renters woke up to him sleeping on their kitchen table!! Also, they have a child who has specia needs which is not an issue to me esp. being that I am going to school to be a special education teacher, but he allowed his child to roam throughout our house while he was looking at things to fix in the house. He allowed him to walk up the stairs and into the master bedroom before my fiance found him upstairs and he just kept calling for him to come downstairs. Also, he watched him as he grabbed a container of mints off the table and open it with his MOUTH, and watched as he put it back on the table after getting a mint!! He came into our house while I was home, and I didn't know it until he called after he LEFT!! I was upstairs and we had a dog that didn't hear him enter. My car was outside and the lights and TV were on. Totally inappropraite! Then we found out he entered other times without us knowing WEEKS later after our shed key was missing for about two weeks, leaving us to think we lost it.
He is ALWAYS a JERK and never cares about what you have to say when you call him. That is...when you can get ahold of him. We nagged him for months, even a year to fix the register cover so there wasn't a hole in the floor, also during the winter we had mice coming up through the floor and all over the house. He finally got an exterminator for us, and when we called him months later to tell him we saw mice again he didn't call the exterminator this time and we had to deal with it ourselves. I am a clean freak and cannot stand dirty houses, having mice make you feel dirty. The house is old and it has spaces for them to get inside, we tried several things to keep them out, foam, steel wool, etc. Also, the neighbors have cats that roam the neighborhood, and also let them outside on a leash daily,so why does a clean neighborhood/house have mice???!
We fixed up a lot of things around the house and when we moved in he told us he would mow the lawn because the last tenants cut it too short. Well he cut it....during the worst time of summer where your grass needs cut at least once a week, he cut it once a month! Our grass was almost a foot tall, and made the neighborhood look TERRIBLE. We got our own mower and called him and told him we would cut it from then on. NEVER asking for money to be taken off the rent, or for the gas money. Snakes were terrible in the yard and to have the grass that tall our dog couldn't see where they were.. not okay with us, esp. also because we had BBQ's and had family over including young children and cannot have our grass that tall with snakes in the yard. (This was one of the smaller concerns). We resigned our lease which was the biggest mistake because then in August we noticed a water stain on our kitchen ceiling that hadn't been there before, and a spot in the basement coming from the main sewer pipe. When I called to let him know about it so he could get a plumber out, somone strange answered their phone (after a day of calling) and informed us they were on vacation. They hadn't told us they were leaving so we had to leave it sit for a week. Well, the got a CHEAP plumber from southern ohio to come "fix" it, and he didn't fix it properly and told him the spot in the basement was due to the gutters, even though I know he knew the real problem which is that the sewer pipe was cracked and he didn't want to fix it becaue he knew it was a hard fix. Then after another week of the water spots getting worse he called him back and gee, he wouldn't answer or call back for two weeks! In the mean time he called another plumber who stated the problem saying it was the sewer pipe that was cracked and said how hard it was going to be to fix it, again plumber number two didn't call back. Then the first plumber came back out and "fixed" it again. The ceiling ended up cracking and dripping before he finally got someone who knew what they were doing out. They were from cleveland ohio and had never been to little ole Barberton (he goes for cheap work because he's a cheap person this is why they were all from far away). Finally they fixed the problem after my fiance tore down the ceiling himself becuase there was black mold all over the ceiling. Saving him $ so someone didn't have to come clear it out, and saving out health. He tried telling us it wasn't the black mold we thought it was, well we may be young but we're not stupid! You have to test the mold to know what kind of mold it is. We got an offer to buy a house that we know the owners of so we got out of our lease early. After making several phone calls to them and trying to talk about how the lease would be ended they finally called back (which by now we're used to waiting for days for a phone call back) his wife said she would need to look over their lease. (So, the idiots don't even know their own lease!!) She told me it would be hard to find renters over the holiday's but they would allow us to get out of the contract because we were upset about issues in the kitchen and other things. During the final walk through he stated how " you really cleaned this place out nice"and told us that it looked "good". We asked when we should expect the 650$ deposit back and he said within a month. They originally told us we would just need to pay 300$ to break the lease, which we paid. I contacted him 2 weeks after moving out to tell him our new address to send the deposit check to and let him know that we took the micorwave we BOUGHT but would sell it to them because of how well it fit in the kitchen on the wall. She basically laughed at me for even thinking that. Then after 30 days we called and asked where the deposit was and she began to scream at my fiance and told he we weren't getting it back because we broke the lease! When they orignally said we only neeeded to pay the 300$. So after the holiday's we were expecting to get 650$ back and never got it. They threatened to take us to court because we still "owe" them for the rest of the rent b/c of the contract. EVEN though they never told us this before we moved out. These two are theives and they are terrible landlords. I wish we would have known this before moving in because we NEVER would have if so. The neighbors are the ONLY positve to the place. I asked to speak to his wife because I could hear her screaming at my fiance and she then screamed at me and treated us like we aren't 24. She told me that we damaged the wall where the microwave was because there was a nickel sized hole in the wall where we hung it, where the kitchen is designed to be hung. She then said it would be 200$ to fix it, and that was unacceptable, even though we asked him before we hung it and he approved. We offered again to sell the microwave we had that fit the spot for 90$. She LAUGHED and said no. These people are a JOKE. The neighbors said the previous tenants have NEVER gotten a deposit back and that the one lady was taking them to small claims court!! I WOULD NEVER MOVE IN TO THIS HOUSE, OR ANY THAT HE RENTS. He is a liar and a creep. Telling people he OWNS the hopspital when he's a NURSE and creeping in our house when we aren't there are totally unacceptable!!! He is a loser and doesn't have time to have a rental house!
